Health Insurance for Internees in Germany
Health Insurance for Internees in Germany
An internee is a person who gains experience and know how in a company or academic institute for vocational training. The idea is to acquire practice in the relevant profession within a relatively short time, normally between 3 and 6 months.
There are 3 types of internship:
• at a University or College
• or outside the University or College while still enrolled there
• or internship without being enrolled at a University or College
What does this mean in terms of your health insurance status in Germany?
The first two types of internees are students and are subject to obligatory student health insurance (Krankenversicherungspflicht für Studenten).
As such, students can choose between a public health insurance or a private one. Internees not enrolled in Further Education are considered employees because they earn an income.
So the latter must take out public health insurance.
